Kungiliya Kalaya Nayanar

Kungiliya Kalaya Nayanar was born in Tirukadavur in the Chola kingdom. The Lord of this place is called Amirda Ghateswarar. Once Devas and Asuras came to this place with nectar in a pot. They wanted to take bath. So, they left the pot on the ground and went to the river. When they came back to the place, they could not lift the pot. The pot itself had been transformed into a Lingam. Hence this Lingam is known as Amrita Lingam. Markandeya worshipped this Lingam and became an immortal boy of 16 years.

The Goddess in this place is called Abhirami Amman. Abhirami Pattar, a great devotee of Mother, sang beautiful songs in praise of Her: and the Mother Who was highly pleased with this, changed the new moon day into a full moon day, in order to save him from the king’s wrath.

Kungiliya Kalaya Nayanar was a Brahmin by caste He got the name because he was always holding a pot (an incense pot) in his hand. He considered burning of incense before the Lord was the best service to Him. Lord Siva was highly pleased with the Nayanar’s intense devotion and his wonderful service. He wanted to put it to test, so that the true glory of his supreme devotion to the Lord may be understood by all.

By the will of Lord Siva, Nayanar became poor suddenly. He sold all his property. His family was starving. Still, he continued to burn incense before the Lord. One day his dutiful wife thought: ‘Everything has been sold. Only this Mangalyam (a sacred thread with a pendant, which every married woman must always have on her person, till the husband dies, when it is removed), is left. I will give it to my Lord: though it is inauspicious to do so. Let him sell it and obtain some rice, with which we could feed the children who may die of hunger otherwise.’ She removed the Mangalyam and gave it to her husband, who gladly received it. As he was proceeding to the market to sell it, Lord Siva Himself appeared before him, in the guise of a hawker and said that he had very good incense. The word incense at once made Nayanar forget himself and the mission! He quickly bought incense for the price of the Mangalyam, and went to the temple to burn it before the Lord.

His wife patiently waited for his return, and, not finding him even after nightfall, put the children to bed and remained praying. The Lord was immensely pleased with this noble couple. The faithful wife was prepared to part with even the most sacred ornament for the service of her lord, her husband. The Kural says: ‘Rain falls at the bidding of her who, on waking from sleep, worships no other God but her husband.’ That night Lord Siva appeared in her dream and blessed her with all wealth.

She woke up from her sleep and was amazed to find all types of wealth in the house. She sang His glories. Immediately she prepared a nice meal and was waiting for her lord’s return.

After blessing the Nayanar’s wife, thus, Lord Siva appeared before Nayanar in the temple and said: ‘Oh noble soul, I am immensely pleased with your devotion. Your dutiful wife is anxiously waiting for you in the house with milk and food. Kindly go to your house.’ It was only then that Nayanar became aware of this world! He returned to the house and found that it had been transformed into a heaven, by the grace of the Lord. Siva Bhaktas, too, had assembled in the house in large numbers. They all sang the glories of the Lord. The Nayanar treated the wealth that the Lord had bestowed upon him as the property of Siva Bhaktas and served them.

One day Nayanar wanted to visit the temple at Tiruppanandal. The Lord of this temple is Arunasatesar. Thatakai was the daughter of an Asura. For getting a son, she worshipped the Siva Lingam regularly. One day at the end of the worship, she wanted to garland the Lingam. As she lifted the garland with both her hands, her cloth began to slip from her waist. She held it with her elbows, and hence could not raise her hands (and the garland) high enough. To relieve her, the Lord leaned to one side and accepted the garland. Many people tried to pull the Lingam straight: but it could not be done. Nayanar heard that the king of the place was upset about it and wanted the Lingam to be straightened. Nayanar wanted to help the king. He tied the Lingam to his neck with a rope (the rope of God-love) and gently pulled it. The Lingam became upright! Devas rained flowers from heaven. All were amazed and recognised the glory of the Nayanar and his great devotion to the Lord.

After spending some more time in the service of Lord Siva and His Bhaktas, Nayanar reached His Abode.

பாடம்:

நம் வாழ்வில் இறைவனுக்கு எந்த இடத்தை தந்திருக்கின்றோம் என்று பார்க்க வேண்டும். மனைவி ,மக்கள்,சுற்றம், நண்பர்கள், காதலர்,வியாபாரம் என்று எல்லாவற்றிற்கும் முதலிடம் ,இரண்டாமிடம் என்று தந்து விட்டு நம்மையும்

இந்த உலகையும் படைத்த இறைவனுக்கு ஆறாவது பத்தாவது இடத்தைத் தருகின்றோம். எப்போது நாம் இறைவனுககு முதலிடத்தைத் தருகின்றோமோ அப்போது நாம் யாருக்கும் எதற்கும் பயப்பட வேண்டியதில்லை.இனறு உலகில் எல்லோரும் எதற்காக இப்படி ஓடிக் கொண்டிருக்கிறார்கள் என்றால் பதனக்காகவும் தன் எதிர் காத்திற்காகவும் தன் பிள்ளைகளின் எதிர் காலத்திற்காகவும் சேர்க்கத்தான் இத்தனை ஓட்டம். ஆனால் அந்த காலத்திலும் சரி, இந்தக் காலத்திலும் சரி இறைவனின் அடியார்கள் எதற்கும் பயப்படுவதில்லை. அவர்களுக்கு பயமே இல்லை. ஏனென்றால் அவன் நம்மைப் பார்த்துக் கொள்வான் என்று அவனையே சதா சர்வ காலமும் சிந்தித்தவண்ணமே இருப்பார்கள். அந்தத் தூய்மையான இறைவனுக்குத் தான் தன் வாழ்க்கையில் முதலிடத்தை தருவார்கள்

குங்குலியக் கலய நாயனார்

திருக்கடவூர் சோழ நாட்டிலுள்ள ஒரு தலம். இத்திருநகரில் எழுந்தருளியுள்ள எம்பெருமானுக்கு அமிர்தகடேசுவரர் என்று திருநாமம் உள்ளது. பிரம்மன், திருமால் முதலிய தேவர்கள் அமிழ்தம் நிறைந்த பொற்குடத்தை இத்திருத்தலத்தில் வைத்தனர். அவ்வமிழ்த குடமே, அமிர்தலிங்கமாக உருப்பெற்று நிலைபெற்ற காரணத்தால் பெருமானுக்கு இப்பெயர் ஏற்பட்டது என்பது புராண வரலாறு ! இதுபற்றியே இத்திருத்தலம் கடவூர் என்ற திருநாமத்தைப் பெற்றது. பால்மணம் மாறாத பாலகன் மார்க்கண்டேயனின் அன்பு அணைப்பிலே கட்டுப்பட்ட எம்பெருமான் காலனைக் காலால் உதைத்த புனிதமான தலமும் இதுவே. இத்தகைய புராணப் பெருமைமிக்க தலத்தில் செந்தண்மை பூண்ட வேதியர்கள் பலர் வாழ்ந்து வந்தனர். அவர்களுள் கலயனார் என்பவரும் ஒருவர் ! இவர் கங்கை அணிந்த மங்கையர் பாகன் திருவடியை இடையறாது வணங்கும் நல்லொழுக்கத்தில் தலைச்சிறந்து விளங்கினார். தூய உள்ளமும், நல்ல நெறியும், சிறந்த பக்தியும் ஒருங்கே அமையப்பெற்ற கலயனார், திருக்கோயிலுக்குக் குங்குலியத் தூபமிடும் திருத்தொண்டினை, பக்தி சிரத்தையோடு செய்து வந்தார். எம்பெருமானுக்குத் தூய மணம் கமழும் குங்கிலியம் அளிக்கும் தொண்டினைச் செய்து வந்த இவர் குங்குலியக் கலயர் என்று பெயர் பெற்றார். ஒருமுறை கலயனார் குடும்பத்தில் வறுமை கோரத் தாண்டவம் புரியத் தொடங்கியது. வறுமையையும் ஒரு பெருமையாகக் கொண்டு சற்றும் மனம் தளராமல் தமது திருத்தொண்டினை மட்டும் இடைவிடாது சிறப்பாகவே செய்து வந்தார் கலயனார். வறுமை நாளுக்கு நாள் வளரத் தொடங்கியது. நிலங்களை விற்றார். கன்று காளைகளை விற்றார். அப்படியிருந்தும், கலயனார்க்கு ஏற்பட்டுள்ள வறுமை மட்டும் குறைந்தபாடில்லை. கலயனார் தமது வாழ்க்கை வசதிகளைச் சிறுகச் சிறுகக் குறைத்துக் கொண்டாரே தவிர திருக்கோயிலுக்குக் குங்குலியம் வழங்கும் திருத்தொண்டினை மட்டும் குறைக்கவேயில்லை. வறுமையின் நிலை கண்டு குடும்பத் தலைவி சொல்லொண்ணாத் துயர் அடைந்தாள். பசியால் ஒட்டிய வயிறுகளுடன் கண்ணீர் விட்டுக் கதறும் குழந்தைகளைப் பார்த்துப் பார்த்து அம்மையார் நெஞ்சம் தணலிடைப் பட்ட புழுப்போல் துடித்தது. இறுதியில் அம்மையார் ஓர் நல்ல முடிவிற்கு வந்தாள். திருமாங்கல்யத்தைக் கழற்றினாள். கணவரிடம் கொடுத்தாள். அதனை விற்றுப் பணம் பெற்று நெல் வாங்கி வருமாறு கேட்டுக் கொண்டாள். மனைவியின் செயலைக் கண்டு மனம் துடிதுடித்துப் போனார் கலயனார். இருந்தும் வேறு வழியின்றி திருமாங்கல்யத்தைப் பெற்றுக் கொண்டு நெல் வாங்கி வரப் புறப்பட்டார். தந்தை எப்படியாவது நெல் வாங்கி வருவார். தாயார் குத்திப் பதமாக்கிச் சோறு சமைத்துப் போடுவார் என்று தங்களுக்குள் எண்ணி எண்ணிப் பூரித்துப் போன சின்னஞ்சிறு குழந்தைகள் அன்னையை அணைத்து மகிழ்ந்தது, அன்னைக்கு முத்தமாரி பொழிந்தன. கலயனார் திருமாங்கல்யத்தை விற்பதற்காகத் தெருவோடு போய்க் கொண்டிருந்தார். அவரது சிந்தனை எல்லாம் நெல் வாங்கும் எண்ணத்தில் இல்லை. மறுநாள் கோயிலுக்குக் குங்குலியம் வாங்க வேண்டும் என்பதிலே தான் இருந்தது. அதற்கு ஏற்றாற்போல், அவரது எதிரில் வணிகன் ஒருவன் குங்குலியப் பொதியுடன் வந்து கொண்டிருந்தான். அவனைக் கண்டதும் பெருமகிழ்ச்சி  கொண்டார் தொண்டர். பசியால் வாடும் பச்சிளம் குழந்தைகளில் அழுது அழுது வாடிப்போன முகமும், ஒட்டிப்போன வயிறும் தெரியவில்லை. திருமாங்கல்யத்தைக் கழற்றிக் கொடுத்து, நகை இழந்து, முகத்தின் களை இழந்து கண்களில் நீர் சிந்த வழி அனுப்பி வைத்த வாழ்க்கைத் துணைவியின் சோகத் தோற்றத்தையும் காண முடியவில்லை. அவரது சிந்தனை, செயல் எல்லாமே அரனாரின் ஆனந்தத் தோற்றத்துள்தான் அழுந்திக் கிடந்தது ! ஆகா ! இறைவனின் திருவருளைத்தான் என்னென்பது ! கையிலே பொன்னையும் கொடுத்து எதிரில் குங்குலியத்தையும் அல்லவா அனுப்பி வைத்திருக்கிறார். இத்தகைய பாக்கியம் இவ்வுலகத்தில் வேறு யாருக்குமே கிட்டாது. எம்பெருமானின் திருவுள்ளம் இந்த ஏழைக்காக இரங்கியதைத்தான் என்னென்பது ! என்றெல்லாம் பலவாறு எண்ணி மகிழ்ந்தார் நாயனார். கலயனார், களிப்புடன் வணிகனை அணுகி, இந்த மாங்கல்யத்தை எடுத்துக் கொண்டு, குங்கிலியப் பொதியைக் கொடு. உனக்கு இறைவன் அருள் புரிவார் என்றார். கலயனார், மாங்கல்யத்தை வணிகனிடம் கொடுத்தார். மகிழ்ச்சியோடு வணிகனும் குங்குலியப் பொதியை அவரிடம் கொடுத்துவிட்டு வந்த வழியே சென்றான். கலயனார், குங்குலியப் பொதியோடு, கோயிலுக்கு விரைந்தார். குங்குலி மூட்டையைச் சேர்ப்பித்துச் சிந்தை மகிழ்ந்தார். இறைவனின் திருநாமத்தைப் போற்றியவாறு அங்கேயே தங்கிவிட்டார். மனையிலே மங்கை நல்லாள் கணவர் வருவார் வருவார் என்று வழிமேல் விழிவைத்துப் பார்த்த வண்ணமாக இருந்தாள். பிள்ளைகளும் கால்கடுக்க நின்றுகொண்டு தந்தையின் வரவை எதிர்பார்த்தனர். எதிர்பார்த்து ஏமந்தனர். அந்தணரின் மனைவிக்கு என்ன செய்வதென்றே புரியவில்லை. இருட்டியும் கணவர் வரவில்லை என்பதை உணர்ந்து ஏமாற்றமும் ஏக்கமும் கொண்டாள். பசியால் அழும் பச்சிளம் பிள்ளைகளை மடிமீது போட்டுக்கொண்டு கண் அயர்ந்து விட்டாள். குழந்தைகளும் பசியின் வேதனையைத் தாங்க முடியாமல் அழுவதற்குக் கூடச் சக்தியற்ற நிலையில் கண் அயர்ந்து விட்டனர். கங்கையைச் சடையிலே தாங்கிய திருசடை அண்ணல் கலயனார் மனை மீது திருக்கண் மலர்ந்தார். அருள்ஒளி மலர்ந்தது! கலயனார் இல்லத்தில் நெல்லும், மணியும், பொன்னும், பட்டாடையும் அளவிட முடியாத அளவிற்கு குவிந்தன. இறைவன் கலயனாருடைய கனவிலும் அவரது மனைவியாரின் கனவிலும் எழுந்தருளி இச்செய்தியைத் திருவாய் மலர்ந்து அருளி மறைந்தார். கலயனார் மனைவி திடுக்கிட்டுத் துயிலெழுந்தாள். வீட்டில் பொன்னும், மணியும், நெல்லும், குவிந்து கிடப்பது கண்டு எல்லையில்லா மகிழ்ச்சியுண்டாள். தாயார் எழுந்தது கண்டு பச்சிளம் குழந்தைகளும் விழித்தெழுந்தன. கலயனார் மனைவி இரவென்றும் பாராமல், அப்பொழுதே உணவைப் பக்குவம் செய்யத் தொடங்கினாள். கோயிலின் புறத்தே துயின்று கொண்டிருந்த கலயனார் எம்பெருமான் கனவில் எழுந்தருளி மொழிந்தது கேட்டு விழித்தெழுந்தார். சிரமீது கரம் தூக்கி நிலத்தில் வீழ்ந்து பணிந்து தொழுதார். அப்பொழுது. இறைவன் அசரீரி உன்னுடைய இல்லத்திற்குச் சென்று, பாலுடன் கலந்த தேன் சுவை உணவை உண்டு பசி தீர்ந்து மகிழ்வாயாக என்று திருவாய் மலர்ந்தார். குங்கிலியக் கலயனார் மகிழ்ச்சி பொங்க மனைக்கு ஓடோடி வந்தார். மனைவி மக்களைக் கண்டார் வாரி அணைத்து மகிழ்ந்தார். இந்த எளியோனையும் ஒரு பொருட்டாக மதித்து ஆட்கொண்ட எம்பிரானின் திருவருட் கருணையைத் தான் என்னென்பேன் என்று கூறி நமச்சிவாய மந்திரத்தைச் சொல்லிப் பணிந்தார். அனைவரும் அரனாரை வழிபட்டனர். குங்குலியக் கலனாரது அன்பின் வலிமையையும், பெருமையயும் மேலும் உலகிற்கு உணர்த்த திருவுள்ளம் கொண்டார் இறைவன். அதற்கு ஏற்றாற்போல் திருப்பனந்தாள் என்னும் திருத்தலத்திலே, பாரே வியக்கும் அளவிற்கு ஒரு சம்பவத்தை ஏற்படுத்தினார். திருப்பனந்தாள் கோயிலில் எழுந்தருளியிருக்கும் இறைவனுக்கு மலர்மாலை அணிவிக்க வந்தாள் ஆதி சைவப் பெண்ணொருத்தி ! அவள் பெயர் தாடகை. இறைவழிபாடு முடிந்த பிறகு இறைவனுக்கு மாலையை அணிவக்கப் போகும் சமயத்தில் அம்மங்கை நல்லாளின் ஆடை சற்று நெகிழ்ந்தது. ஆடையை இரண்டு முழங்கைகளினாலும் இறுகப் பற்றிக்கொண்டு, இறைவனுக்கு மாலையைப் போட முயன்ற அப்பேதைப் பெண் மாலையை இறைவனுக்கு அணிவிக்க முடியாமல் தவித்தாள். அப்பொழுது இறைவன், அப்பெண்ணுக்காக இரங்கிச் சற்றுச் சாய்ந்து கொடுத்தார். மங்கையும் மாலையை அணிவித்து, மகிழ்வோடு சென்றாள். அது முதல் அங்கு சிவலிங்கம் சற்று சாய்ந்த வடிவமாகவே தோற்றமளித்து வந்தது. இந்த நிலையில், திருப்பனந்தாள் ஆலயத்தில் சோழ மன்னருடைய திருப்பணிகள் நடந்து கொண்டிருந்தன. மன்னன் சாய்ந்திருக்கும் சிவலிங்கத்தை நிமிர்ந்து நிறுத்த முயற்சித்தான். யானைகளைச் சிவலிங்கத்தோடு சேர்த்து கயிற்றால் கட்டி இழுத்தனர். ஒன்றும் முடியவில்லை. மன்னன் மனம் வாடினான். இந்த விஷயம் ஊரெல்லாம் காட்டுத் தீ போல் பரவியது. குங்குலியக் கலயனார் காதுகளுக்கு எட்டியது ! இறைவனுக்குத் திருத்தொண்டு புரிந்து வரும் குங்குலியக் கலயனார் திருப்பனந்தாளுக்கு புறப்பட்டார். திருப்பனந்தாள் கோவிலை அடைந்த கலயனார் ஆலயத்தைப் பன்முறை வலம் வந்தார். ஐந்தெழுத்து மந்திரத்தை நினைத்தபடியே குங்குலியப் புகையினால் இறைவனின் சன்னதியைத் தூபமிட்டு சேவித்தார். கலயனார் பூங்கச்சுடன் கூடிய ஓர் கயிற்றை எடுத்தார். அப்பூங்கச்சோடு சேர்ந்த கயிற்றின் ஒரு பக்கத்தை எம்பெருமானுடைய திருமேனியில் பாசத்தோடு பிணைத்து, மறுபக்கத்தைத் தமது கழுத்தில் கட்டிக்கொண்டு பலமாக இழுத்தார். கயிறு இறுகி உயிர் போகும் என்பது பற்றிக் கவலைப்படவில்லை நாயனார் ! இறைவனுக்கு இச்சிறு தொண்டினைக்கூடச் செய்ய முடியாத இந்த உயிர் இருந்தாலென்ன ? பிரிந்தாலென்ன ? என்ற முடிவோடு தமது முழுப் பலத்தையும் கொண்டு இழுத்தார். இறைவனைக் கயிற்றால், தன் கழுத்தோடு கலயனார் பிணைத்து இழுத்த செயல் எம்பெருமானுக்குத் தம்மைப் பக்தி எனும் கயிற்றால் கட்டி இழுப்பது போல் இருந்தது. அன்புக் கயிற்றுக்கு இறைவன் அசைந்து தானே ஆக வேண்டும். அக்கணமே சாய்வு நீங்கி நேரே நிமிர்ந்தார். கலயனார் கழுத்தில் போடப்பட்டிருந்த கயிற்றின் சுருக்கு, அவருக்குப் பூமாலையாக மாறியது. எம்பெருமான் திருமேனியாம் சிவலிங்கத்தின் மீதும், கலயனாரால் கட்டப்பட்டிருந்த பூங்கச்சோடு சேர்ந்த கயிறு, கொன்றைப்ப பூமாலையாக காணப்பட்டது. குங்குலியக் கலயனாரின் பக்தியையும், இறைவனைக் கட்டுப்பட வைத்த அன்பின் திறத்தினையும் கண்டு மன்னனும் மக்களும் களிப்பெய்தினர். சோழ மன்னன் கலயனார் பாதங்களில் வீழ்ந்து வணங்கி, ஐயனே! உங்கள் அன்பின் திறத்தினை என்னென்பது ! திருமாலும் அறியப்படாத எம்பெருமானின் மலரடியை அன்புமிக்க அடியார்கள் அல்லாது வேறு யாரால் அடைய முடியும் ? உம்மால் யாம் உய்ந்தோம். எம் குடி மக்களும் உய்ந்தனர். உலகத்திற்கே உய்வு காலம் தங்களால்தான் ஏற்பட்டது என்றார். கலயனார் இறைவனையே நினைத்து நின்றார் ! அரசன் ஆலயத்திற்குத் திருப்பணிகளும், திருவிழாக்களும் நடத்தினான். கலயனாருக்கு மானியங்கள் கொடுத்து கவுரவப்படுத்தினான். பின்னர் மன நிறைவோடு தன்னகர் அடைந்தான். அரசன் சென்ற பிறகு, கலயனார் அங்கு சில காலம் தங்கியிருந்து அரனாரை வணங்கி வழிபட்டு திருக்கடவூரை அடைந்தார். முன்போல் ஆலய வழிபாட்டைச் செய்யலானார். ஒருமுறை கலயனார், திருக்கடவூர்க்கு எழுந்தருளிய சீர்காழிப் பெருமானுக்கும் திருநாவுக்கரசருக்கும் திருவமுது செய்யும் பேறு பெற்று மகிழ்ந்தார். மண்மடந்தையின் மடியில் சிவத்தொண்டு புரிந்து பல காலம் புகழ்பட வாழ்ந்த குங்குலியக் கலயனார், இறுதியில் இறைவன் திருவடி நீழலை இணைந்த பேரின்ப வாழ்வைப் பெற்றார். குருபூஜை: குங்குலியக்கலய நாயனாரின் குருபூஜை ஆவணி மாதம் மூலம் நட்சத்திரத்தில் கொண்டாடப்படுகிறது. கடவூரிற் கலயன்றன் அடியார்க்கும் அடியேன்.

1. Tiru Neelakanta Nayanar: Chidambaram: Lord Shiva pleased by his self control and devotion. He did not touch any lady since his wife asked him "do not touch us".
2. Iyarpahai Nayanar: Kaveripoompattinam(Tiruchaikadu): Lord Shiva tested his devotion by asking his wife as a gift. He gave that gift without any doubt and any social inhibitions. Lord shiva and Parvathi pleased with their devotion and gave their blessings.
3. Ilayankudi Mara Nayanar: Ilayankudi village: Maranar and his wife did Maheswarpuja very well and got blessings from Lord Shiva.
4. Maiporul Nayanar: hill tribes of Sethi: He saw Lord shiva in Shiva Bhaktas. Lord Shiva immensely pleased with his cosmic love and unquestioning devotion to Lord shiva devotees, and even in a murdèrer he saw Lord shiva.
5. Viralminda Nayanar: Sengunru, a hilly place: He believed that respecting Shiva Bhaktas is respecting Lord Shiva. When he went to Tiruvarur on pilgrimage, he questioned even Sundarmurthi Nayamar on this issue.Lord Siva was greatly pleased with Viralmindar’s great steadfastness in his devotion to Siva Bhaktas and gave entrance into Kailasa.
6. Amaraneedi Nayanar: Pazhaiyaarai in the Chola Kingdom: He shifted his family to Tirunallur to serve Lord Shiva and for daily darshan. He served devotees by giving kowpeenas. Lord Shiva immensely pleased with his whole-hearted and sincere service to shiva Bhaktas. Lord Shiva immensely pleased with his Kowpeena charity and take away Amaraneediar, his wife and his child to Kailasa.
7. Eripatha Nayanar: Karuvur, one of the main cities of the Chola Kingdom, situated on the bank of the river Ambiravati: One day he saw an elephant suddenly became mad and destroyed shiva puja. For that reason he killed that elephant with his axe. By knowing this issue king came and plead him to kíll him also for having that bad elephant. Eripathar pleased and tried to kíll him sef.
